Reinforced Concrete Special Inspection

This course develops students to perform competent concrete inspections to ACI 318. Secondly, this course prepares students to sit for the International Code Council (ICC) Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector examination. Topics covered include: Essential and ethical duties of the Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector, concrete inspection operations, applicable usage of Code references, foundation of reinforced concrete, in-field usage of testing equipment to perform specific tests, placement and coverage of deformed bars, shotcrete application, report writing, structural plans reading as it pertains to Reinforced Concrete, as well as exam preparations according to ICC examination standards for ICC Reinforce concrete Special Inspector Examination.


Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to teach the inspectors the basis of concrete and to help them understand and apply ACI 318 when it comes to rebar and placement of such to ensure not only code compliance, but compliance to plans and specifications of the engineer.

• To understand the composition and properties of concrete

• To become familiar with the proportioning, mixing and testing of concrete

• To become familiar with the use of the Building Code Requirements for Reinforced Concrete, ACI 318-89

• To understand the principles of analysis and design of footings

• To understand the use of reinforcing steel in various reinforced concrete building members

• To become familiar with reinforced concrete, construction and inspection techniques


Course Structure

This course is designed to provide a hybrid experience, including classroom and hands-on training. This class will be divided in the following way:

80% Classroom Training

• Theory and practical application of concrete

• Theory and application of deformed bars

• Theory and application of shot-crete and post tension cables

10% Field Hands-On Training

• Proper usage of concrete testing tools: slump cone, air-pot, roll-a-meter, etc.

• Field training based on job site location at time of class

10% Exam Preparation

• Sample code and plan examinations
