About The Program Director
Letter From The Director
NDE Institute Program Director Jarrus Mitchell, MSI, CWI is a full-time test engineer, business owner and long-time mentor to young people in his community. As President and Lead Inspector of NDE Institute, Mr. Mitchell brings a depth of knowledge and experience in construction inspection and materials testing, as well as quality control and assurance. Mr. Mitchell’s project experience includes materials testing and inspections, construction administration, and project management for horizontal and vertical construction projects including the World Trade Center Transportation Hub New York, NY and the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New York, NY.
Mr. Mitchell began informally training young men from his community back in 2011. It all started with a heart to heart conversation with a young man who was a family friend; he told Mr. Mitchell how he was frustrated with the work he was doing — frustrated that the low wages he was receiving were not enough for him to take care of his growing family. After telling the young about his work and the opportunities he was fortunate enough to find there, Mr. Mitchell agreed to take the young man with him on a few jobs and spend some time during his off hours teaching the young man everything he knew.
Before he knew it, Mr. Mitchell was training about half a dozen young men to perform construction, welding and bolting inspections. After about six months with him, the young men were able to get entry level positions as special inspectors with some of the industry’s most respected employers — some of them making $25 an hour.
Mr. Mitchell has always been committed to giving back. His mantra for living is each one, teach one. He started thinking about a way to increase the impact of the training that he’d previously provided to young men in his community. He did some research on formalizing the program and finding a way to help the “students” secure outside funds to defray the costs of the training materials. That motivation prompted Mr. Mitchell to find out about the process of approval as a WIA eligible training provider.
Today, Mr. Mitchell is proud of the fact that NDE Institute offers a unique combination of classroom training and practical hands on experience, providing a solid foundation in both the theory and application of nondestructive testing. As Special Inspection Institute’s tagline, "Training. Transformation. Tradition." suggests, we’re looking to forever change the lives of the students we teach, elevating their mindsets from that of hourly workers to professional employees.
A Welcome from the School Director, Jarrus Mitchell, MSI, CWI
Welcome to NDE Institute, where training and tradition lead to transformation. I’d like to briefly introduce you to the Nondestructive Testing (NDT) and ICC construction special inspection industries and share with you NDE’s unique philosophy on preparing students for certification and careers as NDT technicians and construction special inspectors.
The NDT and ICC construction inspection industries are on the rise nationally. In 2012-2013, these industries outperformed the rest of the overall economy with an unemployment rate of 4% compared to the national unemployment rate of 7%. Due to the scarcity of qualified inspectors, the industry is experiencing an increase in salaries with annual compensation for full-time NDT workers rising 4% to over $102, 977; an increase of approximately 4% was seen at every certification level.*
At NDE, we bring nearly 15 years of experience in NDT and ICC construction special inspections, representing a deep expertise in the construction, industrial, and petrochemical industries. Our instructors are field-tested, qualified inspectors who have proven to be effective teachers in the classroom and leaders on the job. Whether it’s performing radiographic testing on high pressure pipes to steel erection inspection of high rise construction, or performing quality assurance audits for developers, we can assure you that our instructors will train, prepare, and guide you to a meaningful and lucrative career as an inspector.
Why NDE is Different
The Monarch EffectNDT and ICC construction inspection play an integral role in confirming the integrity of the facilities and infrastructure in our communities. Because of this, our philosophy at NDE is based on our belief that the strongest inspectors are those who are trained with a focus on ethics and essential responsibilities. We call this philosophy The Monarch Effect; we feel it aptly describes the transformation our training offers an inspector, whether he is a seasoned veteran or a novice.
The Monarch Butterfly is a beautiful species unique not only in its storied metamorphosis from a crawling caterpillar to a fluttering butterfly, but also in its ability to travel thousands of miles over sea and land through changing climates and surroundings. Similarly, our inspectors, many of whom come to us with varying levels of education and experience, tranform into qualified professionals able to apply their newly earned technical knowledge to complex projects in a variety of industries.
In conclusion, we thank you for your interest in NDE Institute, and we look forward to providing you with more information about our school and the NDT and ICC construction special inspection industries.
